The division has erupted within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) barely two weeks after the burial of its longtime party leader, the late Raila Odinga.
A section of party members, led by former Makadara MP Reuben Ndolo, has demanded the postponement of ODM’s 20th anniversary celebrations scheduled to take place in Mombasa from November 14 to 17, 2025.
Addressing a media briefing in Nairobi, Ndolo and other ODM founder members said it was insensitive for the party to go ahead with the celebrations while members were still mourning Raila Odinga, who was laid to rest at his Opoda Farm in Bondo, Siaya County, on October 19.
“This is not the right time to celebrate. Raila Odinga was the face and spirit of ODM. We should first mourn him with dignity before we talk about anniversaries,” Ndolo stated.

However, another faction within the party, allied to Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, has opposed the postponement call. They argue that the celebrations should proceed as planned to honor Raila’s legacy and reaffirm the party’s unity.
“The ODM@20 celebrations are not about festivity but a reflection of our journey under Baba’s leadership. We want to celebrate his life and continue his vision,” Governor Wanga said.
The internal standoff underscores growing divisions within ODM following the death of Raila Odinga, who for decades served as the party’s unifying figure.
The ODM National Executive Committee is expected to convene in the coming days to deliberate on whether to proceed with or postpone the event amid increasing pressure from both camps.
