The political temperature in Kasipul Constituency has reached alarming levels after one person was killed and several others injured during a violent clash at a campaign rally. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon in Central Kasipul Ward, where supporters of rival candidates reportedly engaged in a deadly confrontation.
According to reports, chaos erupted when unidentified individuals stormed a political meeting organized by Orange Democratic Party (ODM) candidate Boyd Were, who is contesting in the upcoming Kasipul by-election. Eyewitnesses claim that gunshots were fired moments after vehicles carrying unknown men arrived at the venue, sending supporters fleeing for safety.
In an official statement released later in the evening, Boyd Were condemned the attack, alleging that the violence was orchestrated by his rival’s team.
Statement by Boyd Were:
“This afternoon, while I was peacefully engaging voters in Central Kasipul Ward, Opondo, my event was violently disrupted by Aroko’s team. Within minutes, they stormed the venue, alighted from their vehicles, and directed unprovoked attacks toward us. Sadly, gunshots were heard from Aroko’s team, disrupting the peace that had initially prevailed.”

Were further alleged that the same group later proceeded to Nyalenda, where he was scheduled to meet more voters, and destroyed property including tents, chairs, and a public address system. Two motorcycles were reportedly burnt during the rampage, leaving residents in shock.
“Later in the evening, my close associate and team member, Jim, was attacked on his way home. He sustained a deep cut on his forehead after being assaulted with a machete by individuals well known to him. This barbaric act adds to a growing pattern of political violence that threatens the peace and stability of our constituency,” he added.
Were also referenced a previous incident in Sikri, where women were allegedly assaulted during a Women Empowerment Programme, terming it as part of an ongoing pattern of intimidation ahead of the polls.
“These continuous acts of goonism must come to an end. I firmly call upon all leaders and aspirants to preach peace and respect. Kasipul deserves unity, not violence. Let’s protect our people and allow democracy to prevail,” he said.
Police in Homa Bay County have confirmed the incident, stating that investigations are underway to establish the circumstances leading to the fatal shooting. Homa Bay County Police Commander Julius Muraya said officers had been deployed to restore calm in the area and pursue the suspects behind the attack.
“We have recorded one fatality and several injuries. The situation is under control, and we urge residents to remain calm as investigations continue,” Muraya said.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has also expressed concern over the rising political tension in the constituency, warning candidates against inciting violence or engaging in acts that could compromise the integrity of the upcoming by-election.
As the campaigns intensify, calls for peace continue to dominate public discourse, with community elders and religious leaders urging restraint and dialogue among aspirants.
The tragic incident in Kasipul has now cast a dark shadow over the by-election, highlighting the urgent need for stronger enforcement of electoral laws and the protection of voters’ democratic rights.
