The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has made a far-reaching political decision that could deepen internal divisions within the party, dealing a potential blow to Secretary General Edwin Sifuna. This followed a high-level party meeting chaired by ODM leader Hon. Dr. Oburu Odinga in Vipingo, Kilifi County.
The meeting, attended by most members of the party’s top leadership, focused on ODM’s political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Notably absent were Deputy Party Leader Hon. Godfrey Osotsi and Secretary General Edwin Sifuna. Addressing concerns over their absence, Dr. Oburu Odinga clarified that the two leaders were away with official permission, dismissing speculation of a boycott.
According to a communiqué issued after the meeting, the ODM leadership unanimously resolved to allow Dr. Oburu Odinga to initiate exploratory negotiations with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
The talks will reportedly assess the possibility of a political pact or cooperation framework ahead of the 2027 polls, as part of ODM’s broader strategy in the post-Raila Odinga era.

This decision, however, directly contradicts the public stance taken by Sifuna in the past. During a live interview on Citizen TV with journalist Sam Gituku (popularly known as Waihiga Mwaura / substitute noted), Sifuna firmly rejected any form of cooperation between ODM and President Ruto.
He went as far as stating that he would resign from his position should the party formally agree to work with the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Political observers now say the Vipingo resolution places Sifuna in an awkward position, as the party appears to be moving in a direction he openly opposed. With ODM officially sanctioning engagement with UDA, pressure is mounting on the Nairobi Senator to clarify his next move.
As the political landscape continues to shift, Kenyans are keenly watching whether Sifuna will stand by his word and resign, or seek to reconcile his position with the party’s latest decision. The coming days are expected to test ODM’s unity and redefine its role ahead of the 2027 elections.
