Labour leaders and delegates gathered for the polls described the atmosphere as orderly, focused on worker representation and the future of organised labour in the country. The latest leadership elections within the country’s most influential labour umbrella body concluded without the political drama that has occasionally surrounded similar processes in the past.
The elections, which attracted union officials from different sectors, were conducted under the watch of internal electoral structures designed to ensure fairness and transparency.
It was against this backdrop that Francis Atwoli, the Secretary General of Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU), commended the Kenyan government and political parties for keeping their distance from the union’s electoral process.
Speaking after the conclusion of the elections, Atwoli said the absence of political interference was a positive sign for the labour movement.
According to him, trade unions must remain independent institutions that operate solely in the interests of workers rather than political actors.
He noted that while labour issues often intersect with politics, the governance of unions should be determined by members themselves.
Allowing unions to run their internal affairs freely, he said, strengthens democratic practices within the labour movement and protects workers’ voices.
Atwoli emphasised that union independence is critical for effective advocacy on labour rights, wages, working conditions, and social protections.
When unions are free from external pressure, he argued, they are better positioned to negotiate with employers and the government on behalf of workers.

The long-serving labour leader also acknowledged the role played by union delegates and officials in ensuring that the elections were conducted peacefully. He said their commitment to democratic values demonstrated the maturity of the labour movement in the country.
Observers say the smooth conduct of the elections sends an important signal about institutional stability within the labour sector.
For decades, COTU has played a central role in shaping labour policy and representing millions of workers across various industries, from manufacturing and transport to public service.
Analysts note that maintaining independence is particularly important at a time when economic pressures and labour disputes remain key issues for many Kenyan workers.
Strong and autonomous unions, they argue, are essential in balancing the interests of employees, employers, and government.
Atwoli concluded by urging union members to remain united and focused on advancing workers’ welfare.
He said the credibility of the labour movement depends on transparent leadership, democratic processes, and the unwavering commitment to protect the rights of workers across the country.
