A political storm is quietly building around the planned memorial for the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, after Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka publicly indicated that he will not attend the October 15 event in Bondo.
Kalonzo made the announcement while addressing supporters in Bondo on September 27, saying he had chosen to visit the area early and honour his longtime political ally privately rather than participate in the official anniversary event. Read Full Article Here
His decision has immediately drawn attention because the memorial comes at a sensitive moment in Kenya’s political landscape, with different camps seeking to define Raila’s legacy ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Kalonzo accused political rivals, including members of President William Ruto’s administration, of attempting to use Raila’s death and legacy for political purposes. He questioned the presence of leaders whom he accused of having opposed Raila during his lifetime.
The Wiper leader insisted that Raila’s political influence did not end with his death and argued that his ideals should continue to guide those who worked with him.
Kalonzo also used the Bondo visit to reject suggestions that the opposition is falling apart. Accompanied by DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa and other opposition figures, he said they would continue working together.
The October 15 memorial is expected to attract political leaders from across the country, making Kalonzo’s decision particularly significant.
His absence could therefore become one of the major talking points surrounding the event, especially as political realignments intensify ahead of 2027.
For now, Kalonzo says his priority is to honour Raila on his own terms rather than share a platform he believes could be used to advance political interests.
