What Raila Has Warned Sakaja About Before Saving Him From Impeachment

Raila Odinga Saves Governor Sakaja from Impeachment, Gives One-Month Ultimatum

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader, Honorable Raila Odinga, has stepped in to save Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja from a looming impeachment motion.

Raila’s intervention has bought Sakaja critical time to mend fences with Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), who had threatened to remove him from office over what they termed as “poor leadership and failure to honor agreements.”

Speaking to the press on Tuesday after a high-level consultative meeting with MCAs, Makadara Member of Parliament, Honorable George Aladwa, confirmed that Raila personally intervened to cool tempers and avert the imminent political showdown.

“Baba (Raila Odinga) told us to give Governor Sakaja one more chance. He assured us that he has spoken with the governor, and they have agreed on specific deliverables. The governor has been given one month to fulfill the promises he made. If he fails, then Baba will not defend him again,” Aladwa revealed.

The impeachment motion had reportedly gained traction among MCAs across the political divide, with several leaders accusing Sakaja of neglecting service delivery in key sectors such as waste management, healthcare, and infrastructure.

Concerns had also been raised over alleged strained relations between the county executive and the assembly, with some ward representatives claiming the governor sidelined them in key decision-making processes.

Aladwa, a staunch ODM member and close ally of Raila, disclosed that the ODM leader emphasized the importance of stability in Nairobi’s leadership, warning that a premature impeachment could plunge the capital city into chaos.

He further explained that Raila’s appeal was not a blanket defense of Sakaja, but a conditional reprieve aimed at ensuring accountability.

“Baba made it clear to Governor Sakaja that this is not a free pass. He has only one month to work with the MCAs and implement the agreement. Otherwise, he will be on his own. We as leaders are committed to serving Nairobians, and no one will be allowed to derail development,” Aladwa stated.

Governor Sakaja, who has been facing mounting pressure in recent weeks, is expected to act swiftly to address the grievances raised by the assembly.

Among the key demands are improved service delivery, equitable allocation of resources to wards, and strengthening cooperation between his office and the assembly.

Political observers note that Raila’s intervention highlights his enduring influence in Nairobi politics, despite not holding an elective seat.

His decision to mediate in the matter reflects his strategic role as a power broker, especially within ODM strongholds and beyond.

Meanwhile, the ultimatum issued by Raila has set the stage for a tense one-month period that could either stabilize Sakaja’s leadership or accelerate calls for his removal.

As the countdown begins, all eyes remain on Governor Sakaja to see whether he will seize the opportunity granted by Raila Odinga to prove his leadership capacity—or face the wrath of the assembly without the backing of one of Kenya’s most influential political figures.
