Siaya County Senator Hon. Dr. Oburu Odinga on Friday found himself under public scrutiny after a video emerged showing a lukewarm reception during a public function in his political backyard.
The incident occurred during the Raymond Omollo empowerment programme held at a stadium in Siaya County, where the veteran legislator attempted to engage residents in a style reminiscent of his late brother, Raila Odinga.
Dr. Oburu took over the leadership of the Orange Democratic Party (ODM) following the death of Raila Odinga in India.
He was initially installed as interim party leader, with his position later ratified after Raila’s burial at the Kang’o K’ajaramogi Museum in Bondo, Siaya County. His succession, however, has not been without challenges, as internal wrangles and factional disagreements have since rocked the party.

During the Siaya event, Dr. Oburu was seen standing atop a vehicle as it slowly moved around the stadium pitch, waving to the crowd in attendance.
Unlike the electrifying receptions Raila Odinga was known for—characterised by chants, cheers and visible excitement—the crowd appeared largely unmoved, with many spectators watching quietly as the convoy passed.
The contrast quickly sparked conversation online, with Kenyans comparing Oburu’s reception to the overwhelming enthusiasm that typically greeted Raila in the region.
Raila Odinga, a long-time opposition icon, enjoyed immense personal charisma and a deep emotional connection with supporters, particularly in Luo Nyanza.
Political analysts note that stepping into Raila’s shoes was always going to be a difficult task. They argue that while Oburu Odinga brings experience and institutional memory to the party, charisma and mass appeal cannot be inherited overnight.
The moment has reignited debate on the future of ODM and whether the party can maintain unity and influence without its long-time standard-bearer.
As the 2027 political season slowly takes shape, all eyes remain on how Oburu Odinga navigates internal party dynamics and whether he can win over supporters who are still adjusting to life after Raila.
