NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has firmly defended his clean, issue-based approach to politics, pushing back against critics within the opposition who accuse him of being “soft” on President William Ruto.
Speaking during a local radio interview, Dr. Matiang’i rejected the notion that effective opposition requires launching constant personal insults or firing bitter salvos at the Head of State.
His remarks addressed rising criticism from political observers and fellow opposition figures who have drawn comparisons between his measured tone and the aggressive stance taken by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and other leaders.
Setting out his vision for opposition politics, Dr. Matiang’i insisted that leadership should be anchored in robust policy debate rather than mudslinging and political hostility.
“You do not need to insult the President to show that you are in opposition,” Matiang’i declared. “What matters to Kenyans is a competition of ideas, platforms, track records, and solutions to the economic challenges facing our nation.”
Matiang’i cautioned that relying on personal attacks and ethnic balkanization risks dividing the opposition and distracting from real issues. He noted that voters deserve a credible alternative government built on competence and concrete plans rather than hostility.
Reaffirming his commitment to his presidential ambitions under the opposition umbrella, Matiang’i promised to continue challenging the current administration through constructive policy critiques rather than divisive politics.
