NAIROBI — Cracks within the United Opposition have deepened after Democratic Party (DP) leader Justin Muturi publicly accused Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of political bullying, double-speak, and undermining opposition unity ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Monday, November 2, 2026, the former Attorney General questioned whether Gachagua was genuinely committed to the collective presidential ambition of the “Wantam” movement or merely seeking post-election bargaining power.
“Mr. Gachagua must understand one fundamental truth: No Kenyan President has ever been made by one community alone. The presidency is won through national consensus, strategic alliances, and the ability to unite Kenyans across ethnic boundaries,” Muturi asserted.
Muturi took issue with Gachagua’s push for tripartite political arrangements and efforts to dictate terms within the opposition bloc, warning that such moves risk fragmenting the coalition. He questioned whether the main goal of the opposition was to win State House or simply to secure control over parliamentary and county-level seats.
“Is the objective to win the presidency or to control MPs, legislators, and devolved units while sacrificing the bigger national ambition?” Muturi asked, cautioning that reducing presidential politics to ethnic arithmetic and regional strongholds could derail the aspirations of voters seeking political change.
The former Speaker emphasized that the Democratic Party remains open to constructive dialogue but firmly rejected any intimidation or attempts to undermine party autonomy, insisting that genuine unity requires national sacrifice rather than top-down political domination.
