A fresh political storm has erupted after DAP–Kenya Party leader Hon. Eugene Wamalwa alleged that President William Ruto has begun applying the same political tactics he once used against the late ODM leader Raila Odinga—this time targeting former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Speaking during a public event attended by Gachagua and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Wamalwa claimed the president is strategically weakening his former deputy as the 2027 succession race gains momentum.
According to Wamalwa, the hostile political environment surrounding Gachagua is not coincidental.
He argued that Ruto has “unleashed his people” to discredit Gachagua, the same way he allegedly mobilized allies to undermine Raila Odinga ahead of the 2022 polls and during the push for a broad-based government.
In the run-up to the 2022 election, Ruto and Raila were fierce political rivals, constantly exchanging harsh words as campaigns intensified. Ruto at one point labeled Raila the “father of violence” over recurrent anti-government protests staged by the former prime minister.
Wamalwa now says a similar script is unfolding, with Gachagua being branded “tribal” in what he interprets as a calculated attempt to weaken his influence, especially within the vote-rich Mount Kenya region.
He insisted that the tribal tag is meant to alienate Gachagua from the national political landscape by portraying him as unfit for national leadership.

The former Defence Cabinet Secretary said Ruto views Gachagua as a rising political threat, citing recent events where large segments of the Mt Kenya electorate appear to be rallying behind the former deputy president.
Wamalwa argued that with the region drifting away from the president, the State House team is becoming increasingly uncomfortable, fearing that a strong Gachagua could complicate Ruto’s re-election bid.
Wamalwa further cautioned Kenyans to be vigilant, claiming that political manipulation and character assassination are being used to shape public perception ahead of 2027. He urged the public not to fall for “manufactured narratives” designed to create division and diminish leaders who pose a potential challenge to the ruling establishment.
The remarks have fueled national debate, with analysts saying the widening rift between Ruto and Gachagua continues to expose simmering tensions within Kenya Kwanza. As 2027 politics take shape, all eyes remain fixed on how the president and his former deputy will navigate the growing political turbulence.
