Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has once again stirred the country’s political waters following his remarks at an event attended by former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and former Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa.
The event, held on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, has become the centre of national debate after Gachagua appeared to walk back months of perceived support for Kalonzo Musyoka’s presidential bid.
For several months, Gachagua has been seen warming up to Kalonzo, especially during his frequent visits to the Ukambani region.
At various rallies, the former DP praised the Wiper Party leader as a seasoned and visionary statesman capable of steering the country to a new chapter anchored on strong institutions, economic revival, and the rule of law.
His comments were widely interpreted as an endorsement-in-the-making, especially after he revealed in Nairobi a few weeks ago that he had already crafted a strategy for how Wiper and the Democratic Congress Party (DCP) would share votes in Nairobi County.

However, his latest comments suggest a dramatic shift. Speaking at the Nairobi event in a video that has since gone viral, Gachagua declared that the Mt. Kenya region had not settled on any preferred presidential candidate.
Instead, he emphasized that the region had only agreed on one thing: who not to elect President William Ruto.
“The mountain has not decided on who to support for the top seat,” Gachagua said. “But we have decided on who we shall not elect, and that is William Ruto.”
These remarks have triggered a wave of reactions across the country, with analysts and citizens questioning whether Kalonzo Musyoka should reconsider his growing association with Gachagua.
Some political observers argue that Gachagua’s statement signals a possible shift in alliances, suggesting that he may be keeping his options open or exploring a broader coalition beyond Wiper.
Others believe the former DP is strategically positioning himself as the central figure in Mt. Kenya’s political future, ensuring the region remains politically relevant by delaying its endorsement.
Kenyans on social platforms expressed mixed reactions, with some warning Kalonzo to “be cautious” while others accused Gachagua of playing double politics.
As the 2027 succession race gains momentum, Gachagua’s unpredictable maneuvers continue to shape the country’s political narrative, leaving both supporters and rivals guessing his next move.
