Tensions ran high in Bungoma County on Tuesday after a fist fight broke out during the return of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, just days after his party lost the Chwele–Kabuchai Ward seat.
The by-election, held earlier in the week, saw independent candidate Eric Wekesa clinch victory, defeating Ford Kenya’s Vincent Maunda in all polling stations.
The outcome sparked intense debate among Kenyans over Wetangula’s political influence in his home turf, once considered a stronghold.
Wetangula travelled back home to join his family in mourning the death of his brother, who passed away earlier in the day. However, what was meant to be a somber visit quickly turned chaotic.
In a video circulating online, crowds gathered along the road to receive the Speaker. As his convoy slowed down, Wetangula reportedly handed a bundle of cash to one of his supporters with instructions to distribute it among those present.

Moments later, the situation spiraled out of control. The designated distributor appeared overwhelmed as dozens of men surged forward, each demanding a share of the money.
The video captures pushing, shoving and heated exchanges as the crowd battled for the cash. Some individuals were seen grappling on the ground while others shouted angrily in the background. Wetangula’s convoy eventually drove off as the scuffle intensified.
The incident has since drawn mixed reactions online. A section of Kenyans condemned the chaos, urging leaders to avoid situations that trigger disorder. Others argued that the scene reflects deep-rooted economic desperation among locals.
The fistfight adds to the mounting scrutiny Wetangula faces after the ward loss, with analysts noting growing questions around his political strength in the region. The Speaker has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.
