Video: Drama At The Senate As Sifuna Is Pushed By Security During Scuffles
Tension gripped the Senate on Tuesday after a dramatic confrontation erupted between lawmakers and the security team of Samburu Governor Lati Lelelit, who had reportedly declined to appear before a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) session.
In a video circulating online, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who also leads the Linda Mwananchi initiative, is seen being pushed back by security officers during a heated scuffle outside the Senate chambers.
Sifuna was in the company of several senators, including Enock Wambua and Richard Onyonka, as they attempted to compel the governor to attend the grilling session.
According to witnesses, the confrontation began when Governor Lelelit refused to enter the chambers to respond to audit queries.
Senators allied to the oversight committee reportedly tried to escort him inside, prompting resistance from his security detail. In the ensuing chaos, pushing and shouting were witnessed as security personnel blocked the legislators’ efforts.

The situation escalated further when the governor broke away from the standoff, quickly making his way to his vehicle. His bodyguards engaged the senators briefly before successfully whisking him away from the premises, leaving lawmakers visibly frustrated.
The incident has sparked widespread debate across the country, with many Kenyans questioning the commitment of some county leaders to accountability.
Critics argue that such scenes undermine the spirit of devolution, which was designed to enhance transparency and bring services closer to the people.
Several leaders have now called on President William Ruto to take firm action against governors accused of evading oversight processes.
Others, however, have raised concerns over the conduct of senators, urging respect for due process and decorum within parliamentary institutions.
The Senate is yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
