Trouble for Uhuru Kenyatta After Explosive Kirinyaga Speech
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has found himself at the center of a growing political storm following his recent remarks in Kirinyaga County. The former Head of State sparked debate after calling on opposition leaders to unite ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Uhuru made the remarks while attending the funeral service of the late Kirinyaga County Senator, where several key political figures were present. Among those in attendance were former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Siaya Governor James Orengo, NARC-Kenya leader Martha Karua, and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa.
His call for unity among opposition figures was interpreted by many as an attempt to reshape the political landscape ahead of the next election.

However, his sentiments have not been received well across the political divide. Speaking during a public engagement forum in the Nyanza region, Gladys Wanga, who also serves as the national chairperson of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), launched a sharp attack on the former President.
Wanga accused Uhuru of betraying ODM leader Raila Odinga during the 2022 General Election. According to her, Uhuru had promised to support Raila’s presidential bid but failed to fully back him at a critical moment, allegedly paving the way for President William Ruto to secure victory.
In a surprising turn, Wanga declared her support for Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027, signaling potential cracks within the opposition ranks. She further urged Uhuru to step back from active politics, stating that the country needs space to move forward.
The unfolding exchange highlights deepening divisions within Kenya’s political class, with alliances appearing increasingly fluid as the country inches closer to the next electoral cycle.
Observers now say Uhuru’s remarks may have unintentionally ignited fresh political realignments that could shape the future of Kenyan politics.
