Orange Democratic Party (ODM) Secretary General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna is facing growing pressure within the party following claims about remarks allegedly made by the late ODM leader, Raila Odinga, shortly before his death in India.
Sifuna, who has served the party for nearly eight years, was known to have worked closely with Raila Odinga and was considered one of his most vocal and trusted allies.
However, his strong opposition to the broad-based government arrangement between ODM and President William Ruto’s administration has increasingly placed him at odds with some party members and supporters.
Even before Raila’s death, Sifuna had publicly criticized leaders who supported President Ruto, at times doing so in Raila’s presence. His stance earned him praise from sections of the opposition but also created discomfort among ODM leaders who favored cooperation with the government.

Fresh controversy erupted after Oketch Sella, speaking at a public gathering in Kondele, Kisumu County, claimed that Raila Odinga had privately expressed concern about Sifuna.
According to Sella, Raila allegedly said that Sifuna was being used by opposition forces to divide ODM and undermine the gains of the broad-based government.
Sella further claimed that Raila had urged residents of Kisumu to support President William Ruto’s re-election in the 2027 general election, describing it as a way of honoring his political legacy and ensuring continuity of development.
The remarks have sparked sharp reactions online and within political circles. Many Kenyans have questioned the credibility of Sella’s claims, urging him to stop attacking Sifuna and to refrain from repeatedly invoking Raila Odinga’s name to advance political narratives that cannot be verified.
As the 2027 election approaches, the controversy underscores deepening divisions within ODM, with Sifuna now finding himself at the center of a debate that could shape the party’s future direction.
