Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has once again shaken Kenya’s political landscape after officially registering his own political party, a move that has sparked intense debate over its implications for the 2027 general election.
Sonko, accompanied by a team of loyal allies, on Tuesday stormed the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties where he received the certificate confirming the registration of his new outfit.
Moments after securing the certificate, the flashy former governor proceeded to Westlands Constituency, where he held an impromptu rally that drew a sizeable crowd.
During the event, Sonko declared that his new party would mount a spirited political campaign across Nairobi and beyond, promising what he described as “a new political revolution driven by the common people.”
However, Sonko’s re-entry into active politics has triggered concerns within the camp of former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, who has been positioning himself as a key contender for the 2027 presidential race.

According to political analysts, Sonko—being one of the most influential figures from the Kamba community—could significantly disrupt Kalonzo’s voter base, especially in Nairobi where Sonko still enjoys considerable support.
Analysts argue that Sonko’s new party may split the Kamba vote in urban areas, weakening Kalonzo’s long-standing strategy of consolidating Ukambani and the diaspora vote as a unified block.
With changing political dynamics and shifting loyalties, Sonko’s influence could become a major stumbling block for Kalonzo’s 2027 ambitions.
Many commentators are now urging Kalonzo to reach out to Sonko and negotiate a political partnership before the campaign season fully heats up. They believe that a united front between the two leaders could strengthen the Ukambani vote and boost Kalonzo’s national appeal.
For now, Sonko’s bold political comeback has added fresh uncertainty to the already fluid political environment ahead of 2027.
