A wave of reactions has swept across social media after a newly crafted sculpture of the late Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party leader, Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga, surfaced online. Raila, a towering figure in Kenyan politics for decades, was laid to rest on October 19, 2025, following his death in India on October 15.
His passing plunged the nation into deep mourning, with leaders across the political divide—including President William Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta—paying glowing tribute to him as a committed Pan-Africanist and patriot.

Just weeks after his burial, artist Philemon Kipruto, who previously gained national attention for crafting President Ruto’s statue, unveiled a new sculpture in honour of the late opposition chief.
The artwork, shared widely across digital platforms, immediately caught the attention of Kenyans—though not entirely in the way the sculptor expected.

While many praised Kipruto’s effort and passion for immortalising national icons, a significant section of Kenyans observed that the sculpture bears a closer resemblance to Raila’s elder brother, Dr. Oburu Oginga, rather than Raila himself.
Comments ranged from humorous comparisons to constructive criticism, with some urging the artist to refine the piece to better capture Raila’s distinctive facial features.
Despite the divided opinions, a majority of Kenyans commended Kipruto for honouring Raila’s legacy through art, acknowledging the courage and creativity required to attempt such a significant project.
Supporters encouraged him to keep practicing and improving, noting that even master sculptors refine their work over time.
The debate has since continued to trend across social media, reflecting both the enduring influence of Raila Odinga and the public’s growing appreciation for local artistic talent.
As discussions persist, many hope the sculpture will evolve into a fitting tribute to one of Kenya’s most respected statesmen.
