Rarieda Member of Parliament, Senior Counsel Hon. Otiende Amollo, has joined the ongoing national debate over who should succeed the late Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader, Hon. Raila Odinga.
His remarks come just days after the late opposition chief was laid to rest at his Opoda Farm home in Bondo, Siaya County, following his death in India, where he had gone to seek medical treatment.
Speaking during an interview on Spice FM, Otiende Amollo provided a thoughtful perspective on the succession issue that has gripped both the ODM fraternity and the wider political landscape.

He noted that Raila Odinga’s legacy cannot simply be transferred through appointment or election, emphasizing that certain positions—especially those carrying symbolic and cultural significance—are beyond formal assignment.
“Raila Odinga was not just the ODM Party Leader; he was also the political kingpin of the Luo community and a national figure of unity,” Amollo stated.
“While the ODM leadership can be filled through party structures something already done by his brother, Senator Oburu Odinga the kingship role is not a position anyone can be appointed to. It is one that will be anointed and revealed to the people in accordance with tradition.”
His sentiments have added depth to an already charged debate within ODM and among Raila’s supporters. Many see Otiende’s remarks as a call for patience and respect for cultural processes in determining Raila’s political and symbolic successor.
As ODM navigates this delicate transition, leaders continue to weigh between institutional continuity and honoring the deep emotional and cultural ties Raila Odinga held with his supporters across Kenya.
