The Orange Democratic Party (ODM) is grappling with deep internal divisions following the death of its founder and longtime party leader, Raila Odinga, who passed away on October 15 last year while receiving medical treatment in India.
The vacuum left by Raila’s absence has exposed simmering tensions within the party, threatening to reshape its political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Two clear factions have since emerged within ODM. One camp is pushing for the party to support President William Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027, arguing that cooperation with the current administration would secure ODM’s relevance and influence in government.
The opposing faction, however, insists that ODM should remain independent and field its own presidential candidate to protect the party’s identity and legacy.
Amid these growing divisions, Siaya County Senator Oburu Odinga has sparked fresh controversy after boldly declaring himself ODM’s preferred presidential candidate should the party opt to contest the top seat in 2027.

Speaking during his New Year message to Kenyans, Oburu stated that he is best placed to carry the ODM flag and provide leadership following his brother’s long political journey.
In remarks that have raised eyebrows across the political divide, Oburu warned other aspirants eyeing the ODM ticket to seek alternative parties.
He argued that the ODM constitution grants the party leader powers that include direct nomination, implying that internal competition for the presidential ticket would not be entertained.
His statement has triggered mixed reactions among ODM supporters and political observers. While some see Oburu’s declaration as an attempt to stabilize the party by offering clear leadership, critics argue that such pronouncements risk deepening divisions at a time when unity is crucial.
As 2027 approaches, ODM’s next steps will be closely watched. Whether the party rallies behind Oburu Odinga, backs President Ruto, or fractures further remains a key question that could significantly influence Kenya’s political landscape.
