The family of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo has raised serious questions over the official police account surrounding his fatal road accident, insisting that the veteran politician was travelling to his Gigiri home and not along the route described by authorities.
In a statement released on Saturday evening, December 14, the family disputed police reports claiming that Jirongo was driving toward Nairobi from Nakuru when his Mercedes-Benz collided with a Busia-bound passenger bus along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.
According to relatives, Jirongo had spent his Friday evening in Karen and left at around 11:30 pm headed to his Gigiri residence, a route they say does not pass through the accident scene.
Family spokesperson Fred Gumo expressed concern over what he termed as unexplained circumstances surrounding Jirongo’s final journey.
He questioned how the former MP ended up near Naivasha, far from his intended destination, noting that the family’s last confirmed information places him driving home from Karen.

“Mhe. Jirongo left Karen late at night going home to Gigiri. Yet he was later found dead near Naivasha, reportedly travelling toward Nairobi. That contradiction is what deeply troubles the family,” Gumo said.
Following the crash, Jirongo’s body was first taken to the Naivasha Sub-County Hospital morgue before being transferred to Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi. The family has since announced that an autopsy will be conducted on Monday or Tuesday to establish the exact cause of death.
Meanwhile, friends and colleagues have continued to share details of Jirongo’s final hours. Former Vihiga senator George Khaniri revealed that the politician spent part of Friday with close associates, including National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, and had planned a lunch meeting the following day.
The family has called on investigators to thoroughly probe the incident, including reviewing CCTV footage along the route, to reconstruct Jirongo’s last movements and provide clarity on how he met his untimely death.
