Trans Nzoia County Governor, George Natembeya, has momentarily shifted his focus from the heated national political arena to championing sports development within the county.
Known for his bold and confrontational political style, Natembeya has in recent weeks been actively involved in national campaigns, including a high-profile visit to Malava Constituency alongside Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale in support of opposition candidate Seth Panyako.
Their team, however, suffered a significant defeat, prompting the governor to redirect his energy toward youth empowerment back home.
Speaking at his Trans Nzoia County offices on Tuesday, Natembeya officially launched the third edition of the Governor’s Cup Tournament, an initiative aimed at nurturing local sporting talent.
The governor said the expanded tournament will provide thousands of youths with a platform to showcase their abilities not just within the county, but to the entire country and beyond.
Natembeya emphasized that sports remain one of the most powerful tools for community cohesion, talent discovery, and economic growth.
He noted that the tournament will be bigger and more inclusive than previous editions, with plans to incorporate additional sporting disciplines such as rugby, netball, handball, and track races.
