A contingent of Kenyan police officers who left the country a year ago for a peacekeeping mission in Haiti returned home yesterday to a heroic reception.
The officers were deployed to support the Haitian government in restoring order following widespread gang violence and the collapse of essential state institutions.
Their year-long mission has been hailed as a major success. According to government officials, the Kenyan team played a vital role in helping Haiti regain control of key national facilities, including the main referral hospital and the country’s only functional international airport.
Their efforts not only restored basic order but also enabled humanitarian operations to resume in previously inaccessible areas.
As the officers touched down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, family members, senior security officials and government representatives gathered to welcome them. Celebratory songs, ululations and emotional reunions filled the air, painting a picture of gratitude and national pride.

However, during the reception ceremony, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen delivered a candid message to the returning officers.
While praising their bravery and discipline, he cautioned them against mismanaging the financial allowances earned during the mission. Murkomen urged them to invest their earnings wisely instead of engaging in reckless spending.
He specifically warned against the temptation to rush into marrying second wives, hosting lavish celebrations or engaging in non-productive activities.
The CS insisted that the officers should seek proper financial guidance to ensure long-term stability for themselves and their families.
“You have returned as heroes, and with that comes attention and pressure,” Murkomen said. “Do not let the celebrity status mislead you. Use your earnings to build your future.”
The officers are expected to undergo debriefing sessions before resuming their duties within the National Police Service.
