Former Kakamega County Senator Cleophas Wakhungu Malalah, who also serves as the Deputy Party Leader of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), has sharply criticized the United Opposition team for its decision to appoint Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi as its new spokesperson.
Speaking during a press briefing, Malalah said the opposition had missed an opportunity to inject fresh energy and progressive thinking into its leadership by overlooking the youth, who make up the majority of Kenya’s population.
According to him, the appointment of Dr. Kituyi signaled a continued reliance on “old guards” who may struggle to resonate with the aspirations and realities of younger generations.
“The outfit needs a vibrant youth who understands the current dynamics affecting Kenyans. The youth, who are the majority, are the ones driving the conversations today.
Fresh ideas will help the opposition become the darling of many Kenyans, particularly Gen Z, who are increasingly relating well with the DCP party and the grievances they are airing,” Malalah said.
The former senator argued that political formations in the country must align themselves with the fast-changing socio-economic and political landscape that heavily involves the younger population.

He warned that ignoring the voices of the youth could further alienate the opposition and diminish its chances of positioning itself as a credible alternative to the ruling administration.
“It is important that we all agree on something: we should not bring in so many old guards who will struggle to match the current trends we have. The opposition must rethink this appointment immediately if it truly wants to win the trust of Kenyans,” Malalah insisted.

Malalah’s remarks come at a time when the debate over generational change in politics is dominating public discourse.
With the youth at the forefront of national protests and online activism, calls for a political shift that prioritizes their issues—such as unemployment, high cost of living, and corruption—have grown louder.
By questioning the choice of Dr. Kituyi, a seasoned technocrat and former UNCTAD Secretary-General, Malalah has positioned himself and the DCP as champions of youth inclusion in national politics.
Political observers note that this criticism could be a strategic move to distinguish the DCP from other opposition formations while appealing to the growing youth constituency ahead of the 2027 general election.
The United Opposition team has yet to respond to Malalah’s statement, but insiders say the appointment of Dr. Kituyi was aimed at bringing experience and international exposure to the coalition’s leadership.
However, with increasing calls for generational change, the opposition may face pressure to balance experience with youthful vibrancy in its leadership structure.
