Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has received widespread praise from Kenyans for successfully coordinating the burial of the late Orange Democratic Party leader, Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga.
Together with Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Odinga—who is Raila’s elder brother—Kindiki was tasked with ensuring that the former Prime Minister was given a dignified and befitting send-off.
The duo co-chaired the National Funeral Committee, which organized the week-long national farewell events that culminated in the burial at Raila’s Opoda farm in Bondo, Siaya County.
Many Kenyans commended the coordination, orderliness, and respect observed throughout the ceremonies, describing it as one of the most organized state funerals in the country’s history.

However, even as the nation continues to reflect on Raila Odinga’s legacy, new details have emerged concerning the expenditure from the Office of the Deputy President.
According to official data from the National Treasury, Deputy President Kindiki’s office spent over Ksh 1.34 billion in the first three months of the 2025/2026 financial year—a figure representing 44.9% of its total annual recurrent allocation of Ksh 2.97 billion.
The spending, which covers the period ending September 2025, is significantly higher compared to what was recorded during the tenure of his predecessor, Rigathi Gachagua, in a similar period last year. Gachagua’s office reportedly used less than Ksh 350 million over the same timeframe in 2024.
Analysts attribute the sharp rise in expenditure to Kindiki’s intensified nationwide empowerment tours and economic mobilization programs, which have seen him traverse multiple counties to launch projects and engage communities.
His office has also been heavily involved in logistics surrounding national functions, including the planning of Raila Odinga’s high-profile burial.
While some Kenyans have raised concerns over the rate of spending, others argue that the increased activity reflects a proactive and hands-on approach by the Deputy President in executing his duties.
As the financial year progresses, the Treasury is expected to closely monitor spending trends within the Deputy President’s office to ensure adherence to budgetary limits and accountability in public expenditure.
