Kasipul by-election has created an impact on the Political Landscape. The IEBC declared 27-year-old Boyd Ong’ondo Were of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) as the winner of the Kasipul Constituency by-election on November 27, 2025.
As a result of his victory, several prominent politicians now face threats on the local political landscape.
According to the IEBC, Were scored 16,819 votes, and his closest competitor, independent candidate Philip Nashon Aroko, scored 8,476 votes.
Were now one of the youngest members of parliament in Kenya. He surpassed more experienced opponents in the ODM primaries earlier in the year, which contributed to his victory.
However, although Kasipul is celebrating, the outcome has put pressure on at least four important politicians: A political analyst and strong opponent of Were, Odoyo Owidi, always argued that Kasipul could not be adequately led by a young candidate. And now, voters have disproved him.
Homa Bay Deputy Governor Oyugi Magwanga opposed ODM’s decision and backed Aroko as an independent candidate.
Magwanga’s action has been viewed as a significant political error that could reduce his power in light of Aroko’s defeat.

A political setback is also being experienced by Newton Ogada, who defected to support Aroko after losing to Were in the ODM primaries. Ogada’s future in Kasipul politics has come under scrutiny following Were’s significant victory.
According to analysts, Were’s victory could change Homa Bay County’s political coalitions.
Instead of supporting candidates who are seeking political gain, many voters seem to have favored carrying on the late MP’s legacy.
After results were announced, ODM leaders led by Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga celebrated the victory and urged unity and development-focused leadership. In the coming general elections in 2027, the victory serves as a crucial litmus test for ODM.
The party has gained strategic and symbolic momentum with the election of one of its youngest MPs.
