Here Is the statement.
Tharaka Nithi Governor Onesmus Muthomi Njuki has been appointed the new Vice Chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG), following the resignation of Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga.
Kahiga stepped down on October 22 after facing backlash over insensitive remarks regarding the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Njuki, who had been serving as CoG Chief Whip since October 6, now takes over the Vice Chair position. He previously chaired the CoG Health Committee, bringing extensive experience to the leadership role.
A source familiar with the matter confirmed that Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi has assumed the Chief Whip role, which Njuki vacated. Njuki had replaced Nandi Governor Stephen Sang, who moved to chair the Resource Mobilisation and Partnerships Committee after serving three years as Chief Whip.
Kahiga’s resignation came just days after the October 6 leadership reshuffle, in which he had retained his Vice Chair seat alongside CoG Chair Ahmed Abdullahi of Wajir County.
The fallout followed a video showing Kahiga speaking in Kikuyu to residents of his village, where he appeared to celebrate Raila Odinga’s passing. In the clip, he suggested that the Kenya Kwanza administration would redirect resources from Nyanza back to the Mount Kenya region.
Njuki’s elevation to Vice Chair comes amid efforts to stabilize the council and restore confidence in its leadership following the political controversy.
