Zimbabwean opposition lawmaker Desire Moyo has died after the vehicle he was travelling in hit an elephant along the Bulawayo-Gweru highway in the early hours of Friday morning, October 10, 2025, local media reported.
According to state broadcaster ZBC, the fatal accident occurred while Moyo and four other Members of Parliament were returning from official duties. The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) legislator died instantly, while his colleagues sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital.
Tributes have poured in for the Nkulumane Constituency MP, who was a celebrated poet and arts advocate. Moyo, affectionately known as Moyoxide, would have turned 46 years old on Saturday, a day after the crash.

His constituency office confirmed the tragedy, expressing “deep sorrow and profound shock” over the sudden loss of one of Zimbabwe’s most vibrant political and cultural figures.
Fellow CCC lawmaker Discent Bajila recounted to ZimLive.com how one of the survivors described the terrifying encounter. “They hit the elephant on its backside, and it turned around to fight the vehicle. That’s what caused the most damage and led to Moyo’s fatal injuries,” he said.
The accident happened in an area known for frequent elephant crossings between wildlife ranges in north-western Zimbabwe. Authorities have since warned motorists to exercise caution when driving through the stretch.
Fellow legislator Caston Matewu mourned Moyo as “one of the hardest working MPs in Parliament,” adding that the people of Nkulumane had lost a dedicated leader.
Bulawayo Mayor David Coltart also paid tribute, describing Moyo as an “iconic leader and creative force” who tirelessly championed the arts sector in Zimbabwe.
