Political temperatures have risen after Suna East MP Junet Mohammed sparked outrage with sharp remarks targeting former President Uhuru Kenyatta and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

The controversy follows the emergence of photos showing Uhuru and Kalonzo meeting former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo in Nigeria, a move that has fueled fresh political speculation back home.

Kenya’s political landscape has remained fragile since the Kenya Kwanza government, led by President William Ruto and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, entered a broad-based arrangement with the ODM Party. The decision divided ODM ranks even before the demise of party leader Raila Odinga.

Senior figures including Gladys Wanga, Junet Mohammed, John Mbadi, and MP Kaluma have openly backed the broad-based government, while ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and others have firmly rejected it.

Junet Mohammed’s evening remarks, however, appear to have crossed a line for many Kenyans.

Reacting to the Nigeria meeting, Junet claimed, “They have tried to hijack ODM from inside and failed, and now they have gone overseas to hijack our old man Olusegun Obasanjo from ODM.” The statement quickly circulated online, triggering sharp backlash from different political camps.

Some critics accused Junet of deepening divisions within Azimio and ODM, arguing that such rhetoric explains past electoral failures.

Others went further, claiming he had long manipulated Raila Odinga for personal political survival.

One particularly pointed response read, “Junet, I once thought you were a responsible leader until you began echoing Ruto’s chorus. Lately, you speak without direction just to stay relevant within UDA. Politics is unpredictable, and the media never forgets.”

As debate rages, ODM finds itself at a crossroads. With the 2027 general elections approaching faster than expected, uncertainty looms over the party’s future leadership and direction. Kenyans are watching closely, aware that every statement now could shape alliances, fractures, and the ultimate path ODM will take going forward.
