Uncertainty and heightened tensions have gripped the Middle East following widespread reports that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, may have been killed during an intense joint military operation allegedly carried out by the United States and Israel.
The coordinated assault reportedly targeted senior leadership sites and strategic military installations deep inside Iran.
According to Western and Israeli media, the operation — described by the Pentagon as Operation Epic Fury and by Israel as Operation Lion’s Roar — involved precision airstrikes on fortified compounds in Tehran, including areas believed to house the Supreme Leader’s command center.
Netanyahu Fuels Speculation
In a late-night televised address, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed there were “strong indications” that the 86-year-old cleric did not survive the strikes.
He urged Iranians to “seize this historic moment” and determine their own political future, remarks that immediately drew global attention and condemnation from Tehran.
An unnamed senior Israeli official told Reuters that intelligence suggested Khamenei’s body had been recovered from the rubble of a heavily fortified residence.

Tehran Pushes Back
Iranian authorities have categorically denied the reports. State media dismissed the claims as “psychological and mental warfare” aimed at destabilizing the country.
Meanwhile, Al Jazeera reported that Khamenei has not appeared publicly since the attacks, fueling speculation, even as officials insist he was relocated to a secure location beforehand.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was quoted as saying the Supreme Leader is alive “to the best of our knowledge,” accusing Israel and its allies of spreading misinformation to weaken national morale.
Region on Edge
The alleged killing has triggered immediate retaliation. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced a first wave of missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and U.S. military assets across the Gulf.
Air raid sirens were reported in parts of Israel, while Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and Jordan temporarily closed their airspace amid explosions and intercepted projectiles.
The United Nations Security Council has convened an emergency session as fears grow of a wider regional war.
Analysts warn that confirmation of Khamenei’s death — with no clear successor in place — could mark Iran’s most profound political upheaval since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, with consequences far beyond the region.
