A Kisumu-based preacher has ignited intense controversy after releasing a dramatic “prophecy” alleging that the late opposition leader Raila Odinga was taken to hell following his death, before being mysteriously removed three days later. The claims, shared widely on social media, have triggered a wave of skepticism, criticism, and concern from Kenyans across various platforms.
Pastor Samo, a preacher from the Western region, published a video over the weekend claiming that Raila—who passed away recently—was “taken straight to hell” because he was allegedly initiated into the Freemasons in 1996. According to the pastor, this supposed spiritual affiliation determined Raila’s initial fate in the afterlife.
“When Raila died he was taken straight to hell. The reason why Raila was taken to hell is that in 1996 he was initiated to the Freemasons. So he was taken to hell directly,” Samo alleged in the viral footage.
He further claimed that on the “third day of judgment,” an angel visited Raila’s grave and found Kenyans still conducting his funeral rites, a situation he said surprised the heavenly messenger. The pastor implied that, spiritually, Raila’s judgment had already concluded.
Samo added that the emotional testimonies and expressions of love from Raila’s supporters supposedly compelled divine forces to reconsider the leader’s fate.
“Hundreds and thousands of people … they are testifiers, standing in the presence of God … the testimonies are good, forgiving, supporting,” he claimed.
According to the pastor, the angel presented these testimonies before God, resulting in Raila’s removal from hell — but not admission into heaven.

“So Raila was removed from hell, but he’s not in Heaven. He was just removed because there is a special case pending over Raila,” Samo stated.
However, the preacher insisted Raila remained in spiritual danger because, in his view, the former prime minister never publicly confessed Jesus Christ as his personal saviour.
“He never confessed Jesus Christ as his personal saviour but he confessed his religion. Be careful with religion. Religion isn’t salvation,” Samo said, warning that the lack of confession might ultimately determine Raila’s eternal destiny.
The pastor went on to praise Raila’s personal character, describing him as kind, generous, and innocent of shedding blood.
“He was blood-free. Raila … with his own blood, never killed a man. His hands are pure, bloodless. I’m telling you the truth as a prophet … I have been a prophet for 40 years … and I have no reason to lie,” Samo added.
**Public Reaction: Outrage, Skepticism, and Concern**
The preacher’s claims have sparked debate online, especially on Reddit and X, where many Kenyans dismissed the prophecy as insensitive and dangerous—coming so soon after Raila’s death.
Some users expressed disbelief over the mixing of politics and religion, questioning the motives behind such prophecies. Others described the viral video as “rage bait,” accusing the preacher of exploiting national grief for attention.
“That old Giza is mentioned… it’s a calamity. I wonder what they’ll do when he finally passes on,” one user commented.
Given the heightened emotions surrounding Raila’s death, many Kenyans view the pastor’s statements as provocative and divisive, particularly during a period of national mourning.
As the debate continues, no major religious institution has issued an official comment on the preacher’s claims. Nonetheless, the video has already cemented itself as one of the most polarizing moments in the ongoing public conversation about Raila’s legacy.
