Former Bungoma County Senator and current Speaker of the National Assembly, Rt. Hon. Moses Masika Wetang’ula, has found himself at the centre of intense political debate following the circulation of a letter allegedly indicating his resignation as Ford Kenya Party leader.
Wetang’ula has been the face of Ford Kenya for close to fifteen years, steering the party to dominance across the Western Kenya region.
However, recent political developments, including Ford Kenya’s shocking loss of the Chwele–Kabuchai Ward seat to independent candidate Eric Wekesa, have fueled speculation about the party’s internal stability.
The controversy escalated after a letter bearing Ford Kenya Party letterhead emerged online. According to the contents of the letter seen in the photo, Wetang’ula allegedly wrote to the Ford Kenya Party leadership through the Secretary General, formally notifying them of his decision to resign as Party Leader with immediate effect.

In the letter, Wetang’ula is quoted as saying that the decision was reached after “deep reflection, wide consultations, and careful consideration of the prevailing political landscape and the best interests of supporters and the nation at large.”
The document further claims that he had made a conscious decision to join the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party, citing the need for a broader national platform, stronger political synergy, and effectiveness in advancing Kenya’s socio-economic agenda.
The alleged resignation letter also urges Ford Kenya members and supporters to consider joining him in UDA, arguing that unity and strategic alignment are key to remaining politically relevant.
The letter concludes with Wetang’ula wishing Ford Kenya well as it undertakes its internal constitutional processes and is signed “Rt. Hon. Moses Masika Wetang’ula, Former Party Leader, Ford Kenya Party.”
However, Ford Kenya has moved swiftly to dismiss the claims. Party Secretary General Hon. John Chikati publicly termed the letter misleading and false, insisting that Wetang’ula remains the legitimate Party Leader.
Chikati maintained that no such resignation had been submitted or discussed within official party structures.
The development has left Kenyans divided, with some questioning the timing of the letter amid Ford Kenya’s recent electoral setbacks, while others view it as an attempt to sow confusion within the party.
As things stand, Ford Kenya maintains that Wetang’ula has not resigned, and no official transition has been initiated. Until further clarification from the Speaker himself, the alleged resignation remains just that — an unverified claim fueled by a viral document.
