Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sparked fresh political debate after issuing a stern warning to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) regarding the party’s future following the death and burial of its longtime leader Raila Odinga.
Speaking on Tuesday at the Democratic Change Party (DCP) headquarters in Nairobi, Gachagua claimed that ODM was on the verge of collapse due to alleged behind-the-scenes maneuvers by President William Ruto.
Gachagua alleged that President Ruto had “already purchased” the ODM party shortly after Raila’s burial at the Kang’o Kajaramogi Museum in Bondo, Siaya County.
According to Gachagua, the supposed political deal was negotiated by Suna East MP Junet Mohammed and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, whom he accused of “selling off the party to the Kenya Kwanza administration.”
The former Deputy President further warned ODM members that the party risked losing its influence across several regions where it previously enjoyed overwhelming support.

He argued that the alleged infiltration by President Ruto would weaken ODM’s grassroots structures and leave its supporters politically stranded.
“By the time Ruto is done with them, ODM will be dead,” Gachagua claimed, insisting that the party would struggle to retain or win any seats in key battlegrounds such as Nairobi, Kajiado, Narok, and Kakamega.
He urged ODM’s remaining leadership to act swiftly to reorganize the party and protect its legacy.
Gachagua also criticized what he described as a lack of clear succession planning within ODM following Raila’s passing, saying the void had created opportunities for political manipulation.
ODM has not yet issued a formal response to Gachagua’s remarks, though leaders close to the party dismissed the claims as “wild political propaganda” aimed at causing division during a sensitive transitional period.
