The Former Deputy President of Kenya, Rigathi Gachagua, has reignited the political debate by overtly inviting two ODM leaders, Edwin Sifuna and Babu Owino, to the Democratic Change Party (DCP). The unexpected invitation has sent ripples of speculations about political strains and shifts that might occur before the next election period.
Speaking during a press event, Gachagua said that the MPs who speak their minds were “free to join DCP anytime,” conferring on them political courage and energy.
Immediately after his remarks, outcry was heard from all sides of the divide, with one of the analysts classifying it as the boldest of Gachagua to the opposition.
Those of the Deputy President’s comments turned out loudest during the discussion period as parties reposition themselves for the 2027 elections.

By reaching out to the two most vocal defenders of ODM, Gachagua seems to be trying future partnerships while signaling DCP’s recruitment drives going on in the background.
Sifuna, who is a Nairobi senator and ODM secretary general, has not made an official comment; however, sources indicate that he was “shocked” by the offer.
Babu Owino, a member of parliament from Embakasi East who always seems to be in a political storm, also did not make his intentions clear, thus adding to the curiosity around how ODM will read the DP’s gesture.
