Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has once again stirred public debate after making fresh claims about the conduct of some leaders from the North Eastern region during his time in office between 2022 and 2024.
Speaking during an interview with a local media house, Gachagua alleged that instead of prioritising development and service delivery for their constituents, a section of the leaders focused on personal convenience.
According to Gachagua, whenever he visited the North Eastern region on official duties, some leaders would insist on being ferried using his official helicopter.

He claimed that after attending meetings in the region, the same leaders would request to be flown back to Nairobi, rather than remaining on the ground to engage with local communities and address pressing challenges.
Gachagua described the behaviour as disappointing, noting that he had expected leaders to take advantage of such visits to push for development agendas, mobilise resources, and closely monitor projects meant to uplift the living standards of residents in the historically marginalised region.
He argued that leadership demands sacrifice and presence, especially in areas facing security, infrastructure, and economic challenges.
The remarks have sparked mixed reactions, with some Kenyans supporting Gachagua’s call for accountable leadership, while others accuse him of politicising regional issues.
The video of the interview has since circulated widely online, fuelling renewed national discussion on leadership responsibility and regional development.
