Kakamega County Senator Boni Khalwale stunned mourners and leaders alike after delivering a fiery speech targeting Prime Cabinet Secretary Dr. Musalia Mudavadi during the burial of former Lugari Member of Parliament Honorable Cyrus Jirongo.
The emotionally charged ceremony, held at Jirongo’s Lumakanda home, brought together a host of high-profile leaders, including former President Uhuru Kenyatta, cabinet members, governors, and legislators from across the country.
In a bold and unsparing address, Senator Khalwale openly criticized Dr. Mudavadi, accusing him of misplaced priorities at a time when the Luhya community continues to grapple with economic hardship and underdevelopment.
Khalwale took issue with Mudavadi’s reported push for a referendum aimed at entrenching the position of Prime Cabinet Secretary in the Constitution, arguing that such political pursuits do little to improve the lives of ordinary citizens.

According to Khalwale, it was “deeply unfortunate” for a senior leader from Western Kenya to focus on constitutional positions while many families in the region struggle with poverty, unemployment, and lack of basic services.
He urged Mudavadi to redirect his energy toward championing economic empowerment, development projects, and unity among the Luhya people, rather than engaging in what he termed as elite political engineering.
The senator’s remarks, delivered in front of former President Uhuru Kenyatta and other senior leaders, elicited mixed reactions from the crowd. While some mourners responded with applause and cheers, others appeared visibly uncomfortable with the public dressing-down of the Prime Cabinet Secretary at a funeral.
Videos of Khalwale’s speech have since gone viral on social media, igniting intense debate among Kenyans.
Supporters have praised him for speaking “truth to power” and voicing the frustrations of the grassroots, while critics argue that the burial was not the appropriate platform for such confrontational politics.
The incident once again highlighted the deepening political tensions within Western Kenya leadership and underscored the growing public demand for leaders to prioritize economic transformation over political positioning.
