The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has been navigating a turbulent transition following the death of its longtime leader and former Prime Minister, the late Honorable Raila Odinga.
His passing created a leadership vacuum that quickly exposed underlying tensions within the party, raising fears of fragmentation at a time when unity was most needed.
In the immediate aftermath, Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Odinga, Raila’s younger brother, stepped in to provide interim leadership after being proposed by Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir.
While the move was meant to stabilize the party, it soon became clear that ODM was facing internal divisions, particularly between Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and Suna East Member of Parliament Junet Mohammed.
The situation threatened to escalate until Mama Ida Odinga, Raila’s widow, reportedly intervened decisively.

Speaking during an interview on Spice FM, Jubilee Party Secretary General Honorable Jeremiah Kioni revealed that Mama Ida moved swiftly to prevent a section of ODM’s leadership from pushing for the removal of Edwin Sifuna from his powerful position.
According to Kioni, the move to oust Sifuna would have dealt a major blow to the party, potentially causing ODM to lose significant support and even split into two rival factions.
He noted that Raila Odinga, during his lifetime, allowed Sifuna to speak his mind freely, understanding that the outspoken secretary general represented a critical segment of the party’s support base.
Kioni emphasized that Mama Ida’s intervention helped calm tempers and restore a sense of direction within ODM at a critical moment. By stopping Sifuna’s removal, she is said to have preserved internal balance and prevented further erosion of unity.
A video clip circulating online has since reignited public debate, with many ODM supporters praising Mama Ida for stepping up as a unifying figure and safeguarding Raila Odinga’s political legacy during one of the party’s most fragile moments.
