Kenyans are still reacting to dramatic scenes witnessed during the burial of the late former Lugari Member of Parliament, Honorable Cyrus Jirongo, held on December 30, 2025, at his Lumakanda home in Lugari Constituency.
What was meant to be a solemn farewell quickly turned into a politically charged moment that has since sparked intense debate both online and among political analysts.
President William Ruto, who was unable to attend the burial in person, sent Prime Cabinet Secretary Dr. Musalia Mudavadi as his official representative.
Mudavadi was tasked with delivering the President’s condolence message to the bereaved family and mourners. However, events took an unexpected turn the moment he rose to read the speech.
According to a widely circulated video from the funeral, a significant number of mourners abruptly stood up and walked out of the main tent as Mudavadi began addressing the crowd.

The footage shows rows of seats being left empty, forcing the Prime Cabinet Secretary to continue reading President Ruto’s message in front of a visibly reduced audience.
The incident has been interpreted by some observers as a clear protest against the Kenya Kwanza administration, while others view it as a personal slight directed at Mudavadi, who hails from the Western Kenya region.
Political analysts from Kakamega County have described the move as humiliating and disrespectful, especially considering the setting was a funeral.
However, not all Kenyans agree with the actions of the mourners. A section of the public has condemned the walkout, arguing that funerals should remain apolitical and that expressing dissatisfaction in such a manner was inappropriate and insensitive to the bereaved family.
As reactions continue to pour in, the incident has once again highlighted the deep political divisions in the country.
It also raises questions about the relationship between national leaders and grassroots supporters, particularly in regions considered politically restless ahead of future engagements.
