Kakamega County Senator Boni Khalwale is once again facing turbulence in the political arena, barely days after his security detail was withdrawn under controversial circumstances.
The outspoken legislator now finds himself at the center of intensified scrutiny from within his own party, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), following allegations that he openly campaigned for opposition candidate Seth Panyako in the recently concluded Malava Constituency by-election.
Khalwale had defended his support for Panyako, arguing that the former Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) secretary-general was the right leader to unite the people of Western Kenya.
He maintained that Panyako’s candidature represented the aspirations of the Mulembe community and was a step toward strengthening the region’s political voice.
However, the move appears to have rubbed senior UDA officials the wrong way. According to Nandi County Senator Samson Cherargei, the party is preparing disciplinary action against Khalwale for what it views as open defiance of party directives during the by-election.

Cherargei stated that Khalwale’s conduct amounted to undermining the party’s unity and interests at a critical moment.
Among the impending punitive measures is Khalwale’s removal as the Senate Majority Whip a prestigious leadership position that comes with significant influence and perks.
“The party will take action. He went against the party’s will in Malava, and such indiscipline cannot be tolerated,” Cherargei noted, signaling a tough stance by UDA.
If executed, the removal would be a major blow to Khalwale, who has held the powerful position for months and enjoyed the privileges associated with it. His latest troubles add to a growing list of political challenges, raising questions about his future within the ruling party.
As tensions simmer, political observers say the development could further alter the already shifting political landscape of the Western region ahead of the 2027 elections.
