National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula is facing a fresh political storm after his brother openly broke ranks with Ford Kenya, dealing a potential blow to the unity of his political base in Bungoma.
For years, Wetangula has commanded unwavering loyalty from his family, who have stood by him and his Ford Kenya party through various political battles. However, the tide now seems to be shifting following recent developments that have raised eyebrows within Bungoma’s political circles.
According to a Facebook post by Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, he hosted Wetangula’s brother, Fred Wetang’ula, at his office where the two declared support for Kabuchai-Chwele MCA aspirant Eric Wekesa.
The announcement came as a surprise, given Wetangula’s firm grip on the region’s politics and his leadership of Ford Kenya.

“This morning, I hosted Hon. Eric Wekesa, the Kabuchai-Chwele MCA aspirant, in the company of Mr. Fred Wetang’ula. Our engagement was both cordial and constructive, culminating in my official declaration of Hon. Wekesa as our preferred candidate for the forthcoming by-elections. I wish him great success as he embarks on this important journey of service to the people,” Natembeya wrote.

The move signals a growing rift within the Wetangula family and could dent the Speaker’s long-standing political dominance in the region.
With Bungoma politics often heavily influenced by family and party loyalty, the endorsement of a rival candidate by his own brother could embolden opposition forces and reshape the upcoming by-election contest.
Political analysts argue that Wetangula will now have to move swiftly to consolidate his house and reassure supporters that Ford Kenya remains intact. The unfolding developments will be closely watched as the by-elections draw nearer.
