Khalwale said Edwin Sifuna was unanimously chosen as the leader of Linda Mwananchi during a retreat attended by those expected to take part in the discussions. He added that Siaya Governor James Orengo sent his apologies for missing the meeting.
The remarks appear significant because Amisi has previously presented himself as one of the key figures behind the formation of Linda Mwananchi. He has also openly defended Sifuna, saying the Nairobi senator has his support regardless of the political party he eventually uses.
However, Amisi has also had a turbulent relationship with the movement. In September, he claimed that he had been removed from Linda Mwananchi WhatsApp groups following disagreements over the political vehicle that should carry the movement into the 2027 elections.
Khalwale’s latest remarks therefore place fresh attention on the question of who holds authority within the emerging political formation.
With Sifuna described by Khalwale as the unanimously selected leader, the statement could further fuel debate over Amisi’s role and his continued influence within the movement.
For now, the political drama surrounding Linda Mwananchi appears far from settled, with competing positions continuing to emerge as opposition leaders prepare for the 2027 contest.
