Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued a stern warning to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leadership following the abrupt halt of coalition talks with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Speaking in Kiambu County on April 17, 2026, Gachagua criticized ODM’s decision to withdraw from the negotiations, which the party said was due to alleged disrespect from UDA officials.
The former Deputy President claimed that the move could have far-reaching political consequences, particularly as the country gears up for the 2027 General Election.
Gachagua further alleged that President William Ruto is strategically positioning himself to weaken ODM’s dominance in the Nyanza region, traditionally considered the party’s stronghold.

According to Gachagua, UDA is preparing to field candidates across the region in a bid to significantly reduce ODM’s influence.
In his remarks, Gachagua projected a grim outlook for ODM, stating that the party risks securing fewer than 20 parliamentary seats if the current political dynamics persist.
He emphasized that the political landscape is rapidly shifting and warned ODM leaders against underestimating UDA’s growing reach.
The former Deputy President also hinted at a broader strategy to challenge ODM at the grassroots level, suggesting that UDA’s focus will be on mobilizing support and reshaping voter perception ahead of the elections.
ODM, on its part, has maintained that it will now prioritize strengthening its internal structures and expanding its support base nationwide after suspending the coalition discussions.
The party has dismissed claims of political vulnerability, insisting it remains a formidable force in Kenyan politics.
The developments signal heightened political tensions as alliances continue to shift, setting the stage for a highly competitive 2027 electoral contest.
