President William Ruto was on the spot on Thursday evening after a bold journalist from the Ukambani region confronted him with a hard-hitting question during a live interview at the State Lodge, Kitui.
The President, who is on a four-day development tour of the region, was asked why the people of Ukambani should continue trusting his administration when many of his promises remain unfulfilled.
The tense moment came shortly after Ruto concluded a day-long tour of Kitui County, where he met thousands of residents and local leaders to discuss key development priorities.
According to his allies, the Head of State’s visit aims to engage more than 10,000 grassroots leaders to identify stalled projects and new initiatives that could improve livelihoods in the region.
However, during the media session that followed, one journalist drew attention to the incomplete Thwake Dam project, questioning the President’s sincerity.

“Your Excellency, why should the people of Ukambani trust you on your promises when projects like Thwake Dam have stalled for nearly three years?” the journalist asked, leaving the room in momentary silence.
Visibly caught off guard, President Ruto defended his government, explaining that the Thwake Dam’s delay was due to funding challenges tied to international financing.
“The funds for Thwake Dam are being sourced externally through loans, which takes time. Unlike the affordable housing projects that are locally funded by Kenyans, the dam project depends on external disbursements,” Ruto said.
He further assured residents that his government remains committed to completing all stalled projects before the 2027 general election.
“I want to assure the people of Ukambani that every promise I made will be fulfilled. We are restructuring how we handle externally funded projects to ensure efficiency and transparency,” the President stated.
The exchange quickly went viral on social media, with many Kenyans praising the journalist for asking a bold question, while others applauded Ruto for maintaining composure and providing clarification.
The President is expected to continue his tour in Makueni and Machakos counties, where he will commission several projects and hold public barazas to engage citizens directly on matters of development and governance.
