President William Ruto chaired the Third (Virtual) Session of the Ad Hoc Oversight Committee of Heads of State and Government on African Union (AU) Institutional Reform, reaffirming Kenya’s active role in shaping the governance architecture of the African Union.
The committee is tasked with overseeing and guiding reforms intended to enhance the efficiency, effectiveness and credibility of the AU.
During the session, President Ruto emphasized the importance of sustained political will among member states to fully implement agreed reforms.
He noted that a stronger and more responsive African Union is essential for addressing shared challenges such as peace and security, economic integration, climate change and sustainable development across the continent.
The President highlighted Kenya’s long standing commitment to continental integration, pointing to the country’s consistent engagement in AU reform initiatives and multilateral diplomacy.
He stressed that institutional reforms should not merely exist on paper but must translate into tangible improvements in service delivery, decision making and accountability within AU organs.

The meeting reviewed progress made so far under the AU reform agenda, including efforts to streamline structures, clarify roles between AU institutions and improve financial sustainability.
Leaders also discussed strategies to enhance coordination between the African Union Commission, regional economic communities and member states.
President Ruto called for unity of purpose, urging African leaders to view the reform process as a collective responsibility rather than an administrative exercise.
He observed that a well functioning African Union is critical to amplifying Africa’s voice on the global stage, especially at a time when geopolitical shifts are redefining international relations.
Participants in the virtual session reaffirmed their commitment to the reform agenda and agreed on the need to accelerate implementation timelines. The committee is expected to continue monitoring progress and offering strategic guidance ahead of upcoming AU summits.
Kenya’s leadership of the session further underscored its growing influence in continental affairs, reinforcing Nairobi’s position as a key player in driving governance, cooperation and integration within Africa.
