General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, moved to calm the situation by addressing comments he had previously made online, which had drawn widespread attention both locally and internationally.
The posts, which have since been deleted, triggered questions about Uganda’s diplomatic posture and the potential implications for long standing security arrangements.
In his statement, General Muhoozi issued an apology to the United States, describing the country as a valued friend of Uganda.
He acknowledged that his earlier tweets were based on incorrect information provided to him at the time, an admission that appeared aimed at de escalating tensions and restoring confidence.
The general further revealed that he had held direct discussions with the United States Ambassador to Uganda, noting that the engagement helped clarify the issues raised by his earlier remarks.
According to him, the conversation reaffirmed the strength of bilateral ties and resolved any misunderstandings that may have arisen from the online exchanges.
Emphasising continuity, General Muhoozi stated that military cooperation between Uganda and the United States would proceed as usual.
This cooperation has, over the years, included joint training, intelligence sharing, and collaboration on regional security matters, particularly in counterterrorism efforts in East and Central Africa.
