Speaker of the National Assembly, Honorable Moses Masika Wetangula, has found himself at the center of public discussion following an incident in which he briefly lost his composure during a funeral service in Kabuchai, Bungoma County.
Wetangula was attending the burial of the late Ritar Mutaki, the mother of his personal aide, Mutaki. The event was also graced by several Ford Kenya party leaders and local residents who had gathered to pay their last respects and listen to leaders’ remarks.
However, what was expected to be a calm and solemn occasion briefly turned tense after an interruption from the crowd.
According to a video that has since circulated widely on social media, the Speaker appeared visibly agitated moments after taking the microphone.
As he addressed mourners and highlighted various development projects he said he had championed for the people of Bungoma County, a man from the crowd repeatedly shouted, seemingly attempting to disrupt his speech.

The interruption prompted an immediate reaction from Wetangula, who sternly told the man to keep quiet, using the words “Wewe nyamaza,” which translates to “You, keep quiet.”
He went on to urge the individual to stop shouting and allow the gathering to proceed peacefully, emphasizing the importance of respect during a funeral service.
While the Speaker quickly regained control and continued with his address, the brief exchange sparked mixed reactions among attendees and online viewers.
Some defended Wetangula, arguing that funerals should remain orderly and that leaders deserve a chance to speak without disruption. Others felt that, as a senior national leader, he should have handled the situation with more restraint.
The incident comes at a time when Wetangula’s political influence in Bungoma and the wider Western Kenya region is under close scrutiny, especially following recent electoral setbacks for his party. Nonetheless, allies maintain that the Speaker remains a key figure in the region’s politics.
As debates continue online, the episode has once again highlighted the delicate balance leaders must strike between maintaining authority and exercising calm, particularly in emotionally charged public settings.
