National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has broken his silence following strong political remarks and threats directed at him by Trans Nzoia County Governor George Natembeya, igniting fresh debate about power dynamics in Kenya’s Western region ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The political tension erupted after the Chwele Kabuchai Ward by-election in Bungoma County, where an independent candidate Eric Wekesa, backed by Governor Natembeya clinched victory against a Ford Kenya candidate.
The results shocked Ford Kenya’s leadership, especially considering that Wetang’ula had personally campaigned in the area and appealed to residents to support his party’s flag bearer.
Following the win, Natembeya was quoted issuing statements interpreted as a direct threat to Wetang’ula’s political influence in Bungoma and the wider Western region, fueling speculation of an emerging rivalry between the two leaders.

On December 19, 2025, while speaking at his brother’s funeral, Wetang’ula responded sharply, going for Natembeya’s jugular in remarks captured on video that have since gone viral.
The Speaker dismissed Natembeya’s popular “TAWE” slogan, saying some leaders were busy shouting slogans without clearly explaining their agenda to the people.
Wetang’ula urged Natembeya and other leaders from the Western region to prioritize unity over political theatrics.
He argued that only a united Western bloc could effectively negotiate with other regions for national leadership positions and meaningful development.
Looking ahead to 2027, Wetang’ula revealed that his mission is to bring together leaders and communities from Western Kenya to speak with one voice. According to him, internal divisions only weaken the region’s bargaining power on the national stage.
His remarks have sparked mixed reactions, with some praising his call for unity while others view the exchange as an early sign of intense political realignments as the race to 2027 slowly takes shape.
