Chaos as Meru Governor Isaac Mutuma Is Teargassed During Mashujaa Day Celebrations
ELDORET, Kenya — On Tuesday, October 20, 2026, thousands of Kenyans across the country gathered to mark Mashujaa Day celebrations. While President William Ruto presided over the national main event at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret City, Uasin Gishu County, county governors led decentralized festivities in their respective jurisdictions.
However, the event in Meru County descended into political chaos after police lobbed teargas canisters to disperse a rowdy crowd, disrupting the official proceedings.
Meru County Governor Isaac Mutuma M’Ethingia was forced to cut short his official address at Githongo Stadium as choking fumes swept across the podium.
A viral video circulating online shows Governor Mutuma struggling to deliver his speech while wiping his eyes and coughing, surrounded by security officers attempting to shield him from the irritating gas.

The confrontation erupted when police officers intervened to quell escalating tensions between rival political factions present at the venue. Clashes broke out after supporters associated with former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza began chanting “one term” slogans to heckle the county chief.
Security officers moved in, discharging teargas canisters directly toward the swelling crowd and near the main pavilion to disperse the chanting supporters.
The sudden dispersion triggered panic among attendees, sending residents and local dignitaries scrambling for safety as the Mashujaa Day function ground to an abrupt halt. Prior to the stadium disruptions, tension had already been brewing across Githongo following reports of localized clashes and stone-throwing incidents involving political youth groups.
Security agencies in Meru County have since heightened presence around the area to restore order, while county officials have condemned the violent disruption of a public national holiday celebration.
