The ruling party may have to move swiftly to regain control of the Mount Kenya region, which once overwhelmingly backed President William Ruto, but is now showing growing signs of discontent.
This follows a dramatic scene in Tigania East, Meru County, where residents openly booed Meru Governor Isaac Mutuma during a public address.
According to a video circulating online, the governor’s attempt to rally support for President Ruto’s second term bid turned chaotic when the crowd shouted him down, chanting against his remarks.
Governor Mutuma pleaded for calm and tried to continue his speech, but his efforts were in vain as the angry residents refused to listen, forcing him to cut short his address.
The incident has sparked heated debate within political circles, with analysts warning that the ruling party must urgently re-evaluate its strategy in the region.

Mount Kenya, which delivered a significant share of votes for President Ruto in the 2022 General Election, appears increasingly divided following the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua by the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Meru is widely regarded as a stronghold of the Democratic Conservative Party (DCP), which Gachagua now leads after his fallout with the President.
The growing resentment among locals suggests that Ruto’s influence in the region may be slipping, especially as leaders allied to the DCP continue to attract sympathy and support.
Political observers believe the President’s team must craft a reconciliation formula to address local grievances and mend strained relationships if he hopes to retain Mount Kenya’s backing in 2027.
The latest incident serves as a warning that the once-solid alliance between the region and the ruling party is under serious threat.
