The Mbeere North by-election is shaping up to be one of the most heated political contests in recent memory, pitting President William Ruto against his former deputy, Rigathi Gachagua.
What initially appeared to be a local parliamentary race has now escalated into a high-stakes political duel between the two leaders, exposing deep cracks within the ruling coalition.
Despite Gachagua having withdrawn his own candidate and throwing his weight behind the Democratic Party (DP) flag bearer, Hon. Newton Karish, under the banner of the united opposition, tensions remain high.
The contest has effectively turned into a symbolic test of political strength between the former allies, as each side seeks to demonstrate control over the Mount Kenya region.

Drama unfolded on Tuesday when the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate, associated with President Ruto’s camp, was forced to leave a campaign venue after being heckled by residents.
Videos shared online by National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi showed the UDA candidate being chased away amid chants of “one term,” as the crowd voiced frustration over what they termed as “political arrogance and betrayal.”
In a strongly worded statement, Muturi declared, “The will of the people can never be bought with stolen money. What happened today in Kanyuambora speaks volumes — the people of Mbeere North have spoken loud and clear.”
Muturi further praised the Democratic Party candidate, describing Hon. Newton Karish as a man of integrity and genuine service.
“No amount of intimidation or handouts will change their stand,” he said, adding that Mbeere North voters were ready to make history by rejecting corruption and political manipulation come November 27.
With emotions running high, all eyes are now on Mbeere North as the constituency prepares to decide its political future.
