A Cabinet Secretary appointed by President William Ruto was on Sunday forced to abruptly stop his speech after facing a hostile reception from mourners during a funeral service in Murang’a County, in an incident that has since sparked widespread debate online.
In a video that has gone viral, Trade Cabinet Secretary Honorable Lee Kinyanjui is seen struggling to address the crowd moments after he attempted to defend the Kenya Kwanza administration and rally support for President Ruto to serve two terms.
The mention of “two terms” appeared to trigger loud chants and heckling from the audience, forcing him to pause repeatedly before eventually cutting his speech short.
The funeral, which was attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and several of his allies, quickly turned into a political battleground, with leaders allied to the current administration receiving a cold reception.

Residents could be heard shouting down the CS, dismissing his explanation of the government’s development agenda for the Mount Kenya region.
Despite his attempts to outline economic and trade-related plans aimed at uplifting the region, the crowd remained unmoved, with some demanding accountability over unmet promises and the rising cost of living. The atmosphere became increasingly tense, leaving the CS with little option but to abandon his address altogether.
Adding to the drama, Gachagua, who was seated nearby, was captured on camera watching keenly as events unfolded. At one point, he appeared amused, smiling and laughing as the crowd drowned out the Cabinet Secretary’s speech a moment that has fueled political interpretation and online commentary.
The incident underscores the growing political tensions in the Mount Kenya region as the 2027 general election approaches, highlighting the shifting dynamics and deepening divisions within Kenya’s political landscape.
